How to start the process Print

While other companies boast their ability to analyze their client's media, the Center for Computer Forensics can not only safely acquire and analyze media, but we can also ensure that the media is further protected and preserved well into the future!

The beginning stages for preservation can be done either at the Center for Computer Forensics labs or on-site via mobile forensic kits at the client’s request. The staff at the Center for Computer Forensics are knowledgeable and certified in collection of data from hard drives (laptop or desktop), removable media, flash drives, and server areas.  Using forensically sound methods, bit stream images are acquired via write blocking devices,  and/or cloned copies are made allowing the client to further use their computer while the Center for Computer Forensics maintains custody of the original media.

Once data is received by the Center for Computer Forensics multiple steps are taken to ensure that it is available for the future and protect it from possible manipulation by anyone or anything from that point forward.  Chain of custody documentation will be created and maintained throughout the engagement. Various safeguards that the Center for Computer Forensics employs include physical media being stored in a secured fireproof media safe, bit-stream images of data acquired through write blocking devices which can be verified for originality at any point through the use of mathematical algorithms (MD5 or SHA1 hash values), and back up of the media and case files on high capacity tapes which are then stored in a secured fireproof media safe.

Please contact the Center for Computer Forensics if you have any questions or concerns should you anticipate upcoming litigation!
