School teacher possession of pornography
The Center for Computer Forensics was retained by the in-house counsel for a large public school district to examine whether a high school teacher was in possession of pornography on school property. The examination was requested after another teacher discovered a sexually explicit video on a thumb drive loaned to them by the suspected teacher. There were also reports that the suspected teacher may have been showing pornographic videos to students. The school shipped the school-owned laptop, the school-owned classroom computer and a thumb drive to CCF’s computer forensic lab.
CCF was requested by counsel to examine the computer media for any inappropriate or sexually explicit images or sexually explicit videos. CCF was also engaged to examine the suspect teacher’s communication (instant messages, e-mail, etc). This search was to determine if there were any inappropriate communications between the teacher and any student.
The examination found pornography on the school property including pictures of a legal-aged teenager in the community. No inappropriate communications between the teacher and any student within the school were found.
When the teacher was confronted with the information recovered, the teacher agreed to resolve the matter by terminating their employment with the school district. As required by state law, counsel submitted a report, including the results or CCF’s analysis, to the state tenure board and the teacher can no longer teach in the state.
